

Welcome to the Northside Neighborhood: People Helping People
The Northside neighborhood is one of the oldest and largest neighborhoods in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It is home to 5,800 people and is less than a half mile from downtown. The waste-water treatment plant is located in Northside which provides water for the entire city of Kalamazoo. We are blessed with a water playground, two elementary schools, over 20 churches, at least 15 social service agencies which serve the entire county and approximately 150 businesses. The Kalamazoo Trail way runs through our neighborhood and we have over 132 acres of green space through our five parks:

Kalamazoo Public Safety is an organization which combines law enforcement and fire services into a unified organization with a goal of providing the highest level of professional public service to our community. Our diverse force, comprised of over 303 men and women, incorporates modern technology and comprehensive training techniques to enhance the organization's overall effectiveness while continually striving to meet the challenges of the future.
As a result of the partnership formed with the Shina family and the fact that NACD owns the land, building, and equipment the Park Street Market opened on June 24, 2010.
The Shina family agreed to hire 40% of its workforce from the Northside neighborhood. This accomplishment is very unique due to the fact that normally when a grocery store closes in a low-income minority community they don't re-open and there are not any written agreements to employ residents of the neighborhood.
Again, because our organization owns the facility and the equipment, we are able to continually provide access to affordable, culturally sensitive healthy food year round through partnerships and community support. We would like to thank the Grocery Store Committee Members, Shina Family, City of
