Photos From The Northside!

Welcome to the Northside Neighborhood:  People Helping People

The Northside neighborhood is one of the oldest and largest neighborhoods in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It is home to 5,800 people and is less than a half mile from downtown. The waste-water treatment plant is located in Northside which provides water for the entire city of Kalamazoo. We are blessed with a water playground, two elementary schools, over 20 churches, at least 15 social service agencies which serve the entire county and approximately 150 businesses. The Kalamazoo Trail way runs through our neighborhood and we have over 132 acres of green space through our five parks:

  • Farrel Park was revitalized in 1994 by 275 volunteers,
  • Verburg Park,
  • Martin Luther King,
  • Lacrone Park hosts several annual events,
  • Versluis Dickinson Park hosts the annual summer softball league and many other festivals including: the Can-Am festival and the Bud light baseball tournament.

Park Street Market is open!

As a result of the partnership formed with the Shina family and the fact that NACD owns the land, building, and equipment the Park Street Market opened on June 24, 2010.

The Shina family agreed to hire 40% of its workforce from the Northside neighborhood.  This accomplishment is very unique due to the fact that normally when a grocery store closes in a low-income minority community they don't re-open and there are not any written agreements to employ residents of the neighborhood.

Again, because our organization owns the facility and the equipment, we are able to continually provide access to affordable, culturally sensitive healthy food year round through partnerships and community support.  We would like to thank the Grocery Store Committee Members, Shina Family, City of Kalamazoo, LISC, Kalamazoo Community Foundation, and the Arcus Foundation.  Without the support and capacity building grants, which paid for additional staff to work on barriers to employment and office support staff, our Executive Director would not have been able to use the amount of time needed in the year it took to coordinate the re-opening of the store.
